Email: Judge Thy Neighbor

This email was originally delivered on Saturday, October 3rd, 2026 .

Every churchgoer has heard of the second greatest commandment:

“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” – Mark 12:31

Would it surprise you to know the portion of the law describing what it means to “love thy neighbour” also talks about judgment?

If so, then perhaps you a skewed understanding of the judgment of God.

In describing how to love thy neighbor, the law says, “Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment… but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour” (Leviticus 19:15).

People are quick to accept that the love of God is good but are puzzled about calling the judgment of God good. Yet, both work for the good of others.

Judgment is not only the sentence of wrath poured out upon sinners and sin. It is also an act of love.

Judgment discerns. Judgment is not prejudice or biased. Judgment acknowledges what is right. Judgment produces peace. Judgment loves justice, protects the innocent, seeks truth, and gives mercy.

When the law and Jesus instruct to “love thy neighbor”, it requires the same to “judge thy neighbor” properly.

This is why we need to love judgment, seek judgment, and pursue better judgment. Without it we cannot love properly.

Even the apostle of grace prayed that love would abound more “in all judgment” (Phi 1:9). If you want to love your neighbor, learn to judge them properly.

If you want your love to abound in judgment, plan to attend our seminar on The Judgment of God starting two weeks from today.
